Let me get up on my soap box for a little bit.
Plagiarism - we all know what it is. I’d like to think that the general consensus is that it is dishonest and not a good method for furthering your endeavors.
Do you agree with me there?
Well then, how did we get to a point where plagiarism is deemed “bad” but artificial intelligence is deemed progress?
In academia, plagiarism is punished and can ruin your credibility, trash your future (or current) career, and mar your reputation. It’s something that is difficult to recover from once you’ve been caught in the act.
But now?
I see artists prompting up paintings that steal from fellow colleagues without a thought, a care, or a concern about the implications. The consequences may not have caught up with the action…yet, but I believe they will.
Artistic dishonesty is just as bad as academic dishonesty.
Let me say that again...
Artistic dishonesty is just as bad as academic dishonesty. It damages the same realms of life.
1) Self
Yes. Even though you “prompted” it, you are damaging your reputation as an artist. Anyone can take 2 seconds and type a prompt. Not everyone will take years to learn and master an art medium. On top of that, I’ve always been an advocate for creativity being a muscle…don’t use it? You’ll lose it.
2) Community
It is not flattering to have your work stolen and used without your consent. It is demotivating, demoralizing, and degrading. You are hurting other artists on multiple levels. You aren’t just getting in their pocket. You’re getting in their hearts. You’re getting in their minds.
So, where do we go from here?
I am not sure, but maybe we can look to academia for answers. Academic institutions have codes of conduct, explicitly stated consequences, and professors that care about their students’ growth and development.
People like to say “you’re only cheating yourself,” but with plagiarism, you’re cheating yourself, the original creator, and the entire community. It’s the same with AI.
Just because it feels good, makes it easy, and reduces your stress doesn’t mean it’s right. I think we’ve forgotten that (or turned a blind eye to it for the sake of convenience), but I’ll step down from my soap box and leave you to ponder from here.
