The Funk

"Art is unquestionably one of the purest and highest elements in human happiness. It trains the mind through the eye, and the eye through the mind. As the sun colors flowers, so does art color life." -John Lubbock
Have you ever just been in a funk? Not sick, just not motivated. You feel sluggish, lackluster, and plain ole' blah! 😩
Then, you find it within yourself to do something, anything...and the funk starts to reverse.
It was like climbing a 90-degree mountain to get to that point, but now you've peaked and are able to cruise on down the mountain to an oasis of productivity.
Listen closely. 👂
Your painting life can be the same way.
Yes, painting brings happiness to those doing it and those viewing it, but that does not mean as an artist you are required to be happy-go-lucky all the time.
For some paintings, there is struggle and strife in each brushstroke, while others offer a perfectly blissful experience even if there is a challenge along the way.
And sometimes, you might not feel like painting at all. 😱
Carpal tunnel, arthritis, and other conditions might be eating away at you that day, or you might be searching for a spark of inspiration before you begin your next big endeavor. It's okay to give yourself a break for rest and recovery. However, don't let it be because you got in a funk.
If being in a funk is keeping you from painting, you are denying yourself the happiness and help over that mountain that art can provide. I stress over and over again that art is therapy. 💆‍♀️
So, whenever you stop painting for a while (it happens to everyone eventually), ask yourself why. Is it because you truly need physical, mental, and emotional rest and recovery? Or are you in a funk and denying yourself the key to getting out?
Hand-painted in Adobe Photoshop CC using the Wacom Intuos Pro and the Wacom Art Pen.
