Rufus Steals Your Love

Rufus is a Liar

Rufus is the snooty, know-it-all, art critic that lives inside the mind of every artist.

Do you remember the first time you created something? Was it a mud sculpture? A crayon portrait? Or something entirely different?

Really, this probably isn't the first time you created something, but it is the first time you created something that imprinted into your memory. That is something special to hold on to, and much like a first love, it is something we remember fondly for its innocence. If it is a love that you held on to and grew with over the years, it is also one that evolves. The materials may change or maybe the subjects, but the core relationship is the same from the beginning. There will be ups and downs along the way, but you have the reason you starting loving art to go back to and re-center you.

EXCEPT...Rufus knows this, and he also knows if he can cover your eyes, busy your mind, and change your priorities, you will start to forget that love...then, he can steal it away from you.

It starts with the little concessions.

"Well, this is more convenient."

"An untrained eye won't notice I cut this corner."

"It's streamlining my creative process so that I can do more."

Chip, chip, chip.

And the more you make these concessions? The less you use your creative muscles, the less you reconnect with your first love, and the less you find pleasure in your work.

Is there a point of "no return" like people find in their relationships? Rufus sure would like you to believe that. To quit, to cheapen your relationship, and to forget your first love.

Don't let him fool you, and don't fool yourself. To have a relationship, you have to put in the work. Art isn't going to keep giving to you if you quit investing in it.
