Practice, And Practice Again
Practice makes perfect, right? 🤔
Well, not exactly. Practice makes progress, and if you're interested in painting AND painting well, there is A LOT of practice involved.
In fact, did you know that most artists practice for years before they ever sell a painting? And when we get down to the brass tacks on the matter, artists practice WAY more than they price to sell.
Fine-tuning a craft isn't just about profit. It's about progress, persistence, and patience. If you are only painting commissions, you are missing the mark. Yes, you should make money if art is your profession, but if you are only painting for money, where is there room for growth?
There isn't any!
You're not going to be keen on taking risks.
You're not going to want to paint it over and over, sit on it a while, and then paint it again.
This isn't to downplay the importance of getting commissions, selling paintings, and making a living. In fact, I'm bolstering the importance of practice so that more of the former can happen!
It's highly unlikely that you will only have commissions as an artist. Practice provides the stepping stones at every point of your journey toward being an artist.
So, for every commission, just go ahead and plan on AT LEAST 5 practice paintings. This isn't a practice of the actual commissioned subject. Instead, it's other practice paintings that you'll be able to transfer your skills and nail the commission!
