Making Art Inevitable

“The object isn’t to make art, it’s to be in that wonderful state which makes art inevitable.” - Robert Henri

Or be in that wonderful place! There are so many environmental factors that can affect your artwork. From the weather outside to the noise level in the rooms surrounding your studio, you have to intentionally and carefully construct the best artistic climate for you.

No two artists are exactly the same on the environment they work best in. It takes A LOT of knowing yourself, especially your habits and tendencies when it comes to distractions and productivity.

Having too much going on around you can cause some people to have sensory overload. Disruptive noises, improper lighting, distracting smells, abnormal textures, and so many other sensory components can easily destroy your artistic climate.

For instance, if I can hear my husband and boys yelling throughout the house, if I can see that the lights in my studio are on their way out and dimming, if I can smell my daughter's peach cobbler wafting down the hall, if my Boston Terriers have slobbered all over my Wacom Art Pen, well...let me just go ahead and admit I'm not going to be productive.

Even the time of day can play a huge role in productivity. Some people are naturally more alert and motivated in the wee hours of the morning whereas others find it in the afternoons or late at night or any time in between.

All of this to say, are YOU being intentional with your space, your time, and your environment?

If not, I want to encourage you to start because you are already putting out your own stumbling blocks on your journey as an artist. Every day will not be perfect. Life happens, and things come up. But the more intentional you are, the more likely you are to succeed and to succeed in a more timely manner.
