Like a Dog

When a puppy in training pees on the floor, do you:
A) tell it "good dog,"
B) scold it until it's scared, or
C) use it as a teaching moment to show them your potty procedure?
I'm going to go out on a limb and say C is almost the unanimous answer here, and I know you're thinking "why in the world is she talking about puppy training?"
Well, for the exact reason that if YOU are training yourself in something, B might be closer to the reality of how you treat yourself unless you say A sarcastically. How do I know? Been there, done that, got the t-shirt.
We are our own worst critics, and we can tear ourselves down faster than anyone else, especially when we let Rufus run rampant in our minds. However, when it comes to others, we somehow find this grace and encouragement that we aren't likely to show ourselves.
So, why am I talking about training a puppy? To get the point across you are prone to treating yourself worse than a dog.
Stop. Think about what you are saying to yourself, and start training yourself to have grace, speak kindness, and give encouragement to yourself. You aren't going to get it on the first try, but with continuous effort, all of that training will pay off.
