Though a humorous sentiment, there is truth in the statement. When you want to incorporate a particular feeling within a painting, it helps to get into that frame of mind.
Inspiration is out there and can be found in the simplest of joys and sorrows. You don't have to experience full-blown euphoria or depression in order to incorporate those emotions into your painting. In fact, there is a psychology principle called the empathy gap, and research found that if you can just experience a small amount of what someone else is experiencing to a larger degree, you will have a greater understanding and be able to empathize with the individual.
You don't have to be an empath to experience the emotions of others.
Sometimes, you just need to modify your circumstances or view to gain a greater appreciation for what you're aiming to achieve in your artwork. Sometimes, all it takes is looking at current situations in your life or thinking about past joys or heartaches that you got through.
You will find life experiences and memories are invaluable, especially when it comes to imbuing your artwork with genuine emotion.
