What do we generally associate with mothers and fathers? In my mind, mothers and nurturing go hand-in-hand, while fathers make me think more of modeling. Mothers are the ones to pick you up, dust you off, and comfort you while you get the courage to get your feet back underneath you. They are your confidant, your cheerleader, and your caregiver. Fathers are the ones who play, take you on short trips to town, show you how to throw a ball, and serve as a mentor as you find your place in the world. They are your pusher, your provider, and your protector.
So, how true is it that repetition is both a mother and a father in a sense?
Repetition nurtures learning. It provides the strong roots you need to really grow in your craft. Yet, it also models the action you need to be taking. In that sense, it acts as the wings for you to take flight and make the craft your own. You need both aspects to excel, but here is the kicker...

No, I'm not immune to getting bored doing the same thing over and over. It can feel like a chore, and when it does, goodness, is it hard to do!
So, really the question is, how do we make repetition seem less like a chore and more like a stepping stone? Attitude has a LOT to do with it. How you approach a deliberate practice session is going to set the tone.
