Capture and Release

Girl with flower in hair
"A painting to me is primarily a verb, not a noun, an event first and only secondarily an image." – Elaine de Kooning

Many times when we talk about taking a photograph, we use the word “capture.” But did we actually chase it down and contain it?

No. Well, not really.

What we “capture” isn’t the subject but the moment.

It can take several shots before we consider one a “capture.” So, it isn’t the subject that changes! Rather it’s the moment, the emotion, the connection, the action, the whatever that extra umph is. That is what changes!

Now, with painting a photograph, the brushstrokes can almost make it feel as if the moment is coming back to life. Movement can be recreated, emotion can be made clear through the background and highlights, and so much more can be accomplished.

So if the original photograph is called the “capture,” I’m going to say the painting is the release.

Hand-painted in Adobe Photoshop CC using the Wacom Intuos Pro and the Wacom Art Pen.
