The Golf Ball Day

“A work of art which did not begin in emotion is not art.” -Paul Cezanne

I know sometimes a painting can be the cause of frustration...oh boy, do I know...but have you ever had a rotten day?

Those days where nothing seems to be going your way or working in your favor. Everything seems to be falling apart or adding more to your already extensive to-do list.

But instead of tackling that to-do list...something comes over you, and you stop EVERYTHING you're doing, sit down, and paint.

The calm that rushes over you is almost intoxicating. With each brushstroke, the tension and stress start to fade into the recesses of your mind.

Everyone is allowed a bad day. There was a teacher that took a large mason jar and filled it with a bag full of small beads, a handful of medium beads, and 2 golf balls. He explained that the year is full of several days that can range from exciting to mediocre, and though there are times when you have to push through a bad day, sometimes, the day can get the best of you. He pointed out how the medium beads weren't that much bigger than the normal ones, but the golf balls took up a substantial amount of the jar. Thus started the concept of golf ball days.

Each student was allowed 2 golf ball days a year in the classroom, where they wouldn't be required to answer any questions, participate in discussions, or anything else. Essentially, they would be left alone for the duration of the class with no questions asked. The only requirements were that they had to tell him they were having a golf ball day and they couldn't interrupt the class.

Sometimes, you have to take a golf ball day. Let the stress roll off your shoulders, and let the to-do list fall to the wayside for a while.

Everything will be okay. Just paint to your heart's content. ๐Ÿงก
